Shell Maintenance for Island Escape Spas, Custom Hot Tub and Artic spas

The reason you will want to keep up with period maintenance on your custom hot tub shell is because the shell is very susceptible to scum lines, scale lines, and mineral deposits. This is especially something you need to watch out for if you own a soft shell custom hot tub.

Spa dealers will tell you the best time to clean your Island Escape Spas or Artic spas shell is when you drain your custom hot tub, so clean it every 2 to 4 months. Thankfully, the cleaning process of the shell is very easy and not time consuming. The following is the simple steps to getting a clean and healthy hot tub shell once you’ve drained the water out of your Island Escape spas or Artic spas:

  • First, you’ll want to clean the Island Escape spas and Artic spas shell with an acrylic brightener (you can find at your local spa dealers store) in order to remove any scum lines after draining the water out of the tub. It kills mold and mildew odors without bleaching the surface, which prevents scum lines from forming. Plus, because it is a natural enzyme, it won't affect your water's chemistry.

  • *tip: You can also use this brightener when the tub is still filled to eliminate faint scum lines that have formed on the water line
  • Next, you’ll want to apply a thermo gloss seal to the Island Escape or Artic spas shell surface to fill in minor scrapes and scratches. This is an innovative polish that has unique reactive silicones which chemically bond to custom hot tub spa surfaces, providing a hard, glossy, sturdy, protective coating. This gloss helps to prevent scum lines on the artic spa, and it's simple to apply without streaking.
After those two simple steps, you have a clean custom hot tubs shell. Sounds like a very easy task, but the importance of doing this is immense. If your Island Escape or Artic spas shell is damaged, it can be a great cost to you. A side not that is important to remember is to beware of using products such as Windex as they will change the water's chemistry and beware of using other abrasive cleaners that can scratch the shell surface while you are cleaning it.

In addition, there are two different products that spa dealers have found to be useful when cleaning the shell. The first is the Scum Mitt. This mitt is exclusively designed to remove scum lines from artic spa shell. It's perfect for custom hot tubs acrylic, vinyl, fiberglass or tile surfaces, so you can even use it to clean your shower or bathtub as well. The mitt works so well because a large abrasive pad is permanently bonded to its latex mitten for a long-lasting scrubbing mitt.

The next tool that works great for cleaning artic spa shells is also a cleaning mitt. The Mytee Mitt is a little more abrasive than the Scum Mitt, but it's just as safe to use on your artic spa shell. Use it with cleaners or just by itself, and it is effective when removing algae, rust, mold, and mildew easily from tiles. When you're done using the mitt, just rinse it off and you can use it again in the future.

And that is all it takes to maintain a clean custom hot tubs shell. Once it is clean you can refill your hot tub by following the directions previously mentioned. Once again, make sure to keep proper water chemical balances and sanitizer balances to avoid scum and mineral lines on your artic spa shell.
