Bromine & Chlorine Alternatives for your Hot Tub and Spas

Another commonly used small hot tub sanitizer is Bromine. Typically, Bromine needs to be used at higher concentration levels than Chlorine to be effective. Bromine, just like Chlorine, kills viruses and bacteria that live in your hot tub and spas water. Bromine is most commonly used in hot tub and spas through a floating tube that slowly distributes the sanitizer. This can make the maintenance of your hot tu simple by dispensing the sanitizer for you, resulting in less forgetfulness.
The advantages of small hot tub Bromine include:
  • Not a strong odor
  • Easy to use
  • Inexpensive
  • Readily available for hot tub and spas
  • More tolerant of a higher hot tu water pH level than Chlorine
  • More effective at high temperature hot tu water conditions
  • Less harsh to the eyes than Chlorine

The disadvantages of small hot tub Bromine include:
  • Can bleach out the shell of your small hot tub
  • Still has a minor odor (the tablets contain 30%
  • chlorine)
  • Not pH neutral- if you use Bromine remember to test your hot tub and spas pH regularly and make any necessary changes
  • Can cause skin to become dry
  • Sunlight can cause Bromine to breakdown
  • Can fade jewelry if worn in the hot tu

Bromine Hot Tub Instructions
Bromine tablets simply go into a dispenser that floats in your hot tub, constantly sanitizing your small hot tub water. When filling your small hot tub with water, some sodium bromide needs to be added to activate the tablets. HotTubsDepot recommends that you determine your Bromine dose with the goal in mind that you want your hot tub and spas water to attain a Bromine concentration of 4 - 6 ppm (parts per million) instead of doing a standard measurement, such as 2 teaspoons or one tablet. If you own a small hot tub, your small hot tub will require a lower Bromine concentration than large 6 person hot tub and spas. Another factor to keep in mind is that the strength of different products may vary. When using bromine as a hot tubs chemical sanitizer you must maintain the waters pH between 7.2 - 7.6, and the total Alkalinity between 125 - 150 PPM (parts per million). Bromine should be added to your hot tu after usage, and even on days when the hot tub and spas not in use. If the use of your hot tub and spas pattern suddenly changes (more usage/people), check your hot tub and spas water to determine if the dosage needs adjustment. *Important: Do not mix Bromine in concentrated form with any other chemicals, and don't add other chemicals to dispensers when using tablets. A chemical reaction leading to flare ups and explosions may result.
Aside from chlorine and bromine, a third common chemical is Biguanide. This chemical option is unlike chlorine and bromine because it is virtually odorless and doesn't provoke dry skin or irritation to the eyes. Biguanide is one of the most popular chemical small hot tub sanitizers because it doesn't require Chlorine or Bromine. It is effective in the killing of bacteria that live in your small hot tub water, but there are some things it cannot do that other hot tub chemicals can.
The advantages of small hot tub Biguanide include:
  • Little chemical odor in the hot tub
  • Great for people who are sensitive to Chlorine and Bromine
  • Cannot destroy organic contamination- concentrated hydrogen peroxide must be added to the small hot tub regularl.
  • Certain bacteria can become resistant to Biguanide after years of usage-resulting in hot tub mold

Lastly, there are two other alternatives to bromine and chlorine. The first one is the Cleanwater Blue System which works without the chemical odor, and with none of the common irritations that can sometimes be caused by chlorine or bromine in your small hot tub water. This option is cost efficient and usually last up to 5 months or longer. The way that this works is it kills bacteria and algae by introducing a copper ion into the spa water. This mineral stops the cell structure and chemical makeup of these organisms, and eliminates them in a way that is non-toxic to you and your guests.
The last alternative is called Nature2 Spa Purifier. The way this sanitizing option works is by being placed right in your hot tub water filter. This option is practically odorless, it doesn't irritate skin or eyes, and it doesn't turn your hair a different color. However some people don't prefer this method of sanitation since it last only up to four months.

So we just covered lots of different methods of getting your hot tu water sanitized. Depending on your personal sensitivity and your preferences, one of these sanitizers should be the perfect fit for you.
