Spas and Hot Tub Chlorine

The maintenance of spas and hot tub significantly relies upon hot tub chemicals. Bacteria and algae are known to grow in spas and hot tub due to the warm water temperatures; therefore, it is important to apply sanitizers to the Island Escape or Atlantis spa hot tub in order to kill these bacteria. The most recognized sanitizer for spas and hot tub is chlorine. There are a couple different forms of chlorine you can find at your nearest hot tub store. These include granulated chlorine (sodium dichlor), pool tabs (trichlor), or household bleach (sodium hypochlorite). While chlorine in general is not the best choice for spas and hot tub sanitation (it’s generally used in swimming pools), the best option would be the granulated chlorine. The pool tab form of chlorine is especially only good for swimming pools since it doesn’t come in a smaller amount specifically for spas and hot tub. And the household bleach should definitely not be used for your Island Escape or Atlantis spa hot tub because it can accidentally discolor the Island Escape or Atlantis spa hot tub covers and it also affects the pH balance of the spa water. The following is a more detailed description of granulated chlorine and some advantages and disadvantages of using the granulated chlorine as your sanitization choice.

Granulated Chlorine for an Island Escape or Atlantis spa hot tub -
Granulated chlorine, also known as sodium dichloride, is the most commonly used water treatment product in the spas and hot tub business in combination with an ozone generator. Chlorine, just like Bromine, kills viruses and bacteria that live in your hot tubs water. Chlorine can come in the form of grains or tablets created specifically for Island Escape and Atlantis spa hot tub use.

The advantages of Spas and Hot Tub Chlorine include:

  • Can be used as hot tub sanitizer & shock treatment
  • It’s readily available at your nearest hot tub store
  • Acts fast, lives for short amount of time in hot water
  • When used correctly, gives off very little chemical odor
  • Comes in convenient tablets for your Island Escape or Atlantis spa hot tub
  • Has a pretty neutral pH level (7.0).
  • Inexpensive

The disadvantages of Hot Tub Store Chlorine include:

  • Chlorine grains are very inconvenient and need to be added to your spas and hot tub regularly
  • Can become weaker or “gas off” when exposed to high temperatures
  • When used incorrectly, chlorine gives off a strong odor that can drive guests from your hot tub
  • Gives some people a rash and/or itch
  • Varieties of chlorine can confuse Island Escape and Atlantis spa hot tub owners. Only sodium dichlor should be used in your spas and hot tub.

Chlorine Spas and Hot Tub Instructions
Choose Hot Tubs Direct recommends that you determine your Chlorine dose with the goal in mind that you want your spas and hot tub water to attain a Chlorine concentration of 2 – 3 PPM (parts per million) instead of doing a standard measurement, such as 2 teaspoons. If you own a huge hot tub, your hot tub will require a higher Chlorine concentration than small two person hot tubs. Another factor to keep in mind is that the strength of different products may vary. Chlorine should be added to your Island Escape and Atlantis spa hot tubs after usage, and even on days when the hot tubs not in use. If the use of your hot tubs pattern suddenly changes (more usage/people), check your Island Escape or Atlantis spa hot tub water to determine if the dosage needs adjustment. Shocking your hot tubs water by adding about 7X your normal daily dose eliminates chloramines, and disinfects your water. Using Chlorine in hot tubs is a process of trial and error; but once your system has been mastered it becomes an easy process and turns into second nature.

However, using chlorine as your primary source for water purification may not be the healthiest choice for your Island Escape spas or Atlantis spa hot tub. There are other options available at your hot tub store that we will discuss next that may be in your best interest to use.
